Who Wants Cake?

A few years ago my friend Karyn invited me to a cake baking class given by a visiting NZ baker, Jordan Rondel, fondly known as The Caker! https://www.thecaker.co.nz  Being a Kiwi, I always love meeting and supporting other Kiwi's who come to L.A. doing 'their thing',  so I happily went along.

We had such an inspiring few hours with the talented and lovely Jordan who made baking her amazing and delicious cakes seem so easy!  Jordan also owns a magical cake shop in Auckland, on K Rd, which I always love to stop by and pick up some of her delicious freshly baked cakes ...omg....double layer lemon and raspberry cake...helloooo! :) So good! She has written 2 cake / dessert books full of delicious, yet wholesome recipes which will inspire even the novice baker. She also now has her own line of ready to make cake-mix boxes (in case you're intimidated by the 'make it from scratch' method!)

I love following TheCaker on Instagram and when I wanted to do a line of cake cards, I asked Jordan if she would mind me using some of her gorgeous cake images to base the card line on. She so graciously said yes to my request and I can now obsess over her gorgeous cakes daily as I design and glitter the cards and get them out into the hands of card lovers! I wanted a line of simple and pretty, birthday, congrats, get well, love and thank you cards, and I felt cakes can always say all those things...especially when they are as stunning as The Caker's! The fresh flower decorations are stunning!

Thank you Jordan! Here are a few images of what will be coming soon in time for Spring!

Cards to match my state of mind!

Such an interesting start to the new year and now, more than ever, I feel very unified with all the amazing women out there making a stand and being heard. It's all about the love, caring, strength, kindness, tolerance, unity, understanding and truth. As my favorite Dalai Lama saying goes..."Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

Box Sets of cards are a beautiful thing!

I always feel like women looking through my cards are like kids in a candy store. They pick out one they like, then one more, and then 2 others they hadn't seen, one more that's 'just perfect' for so and so, and they laugh, linger over some and then leave with a unique assortment that's fitting to them and their friends. I love being witness to the laughter and stories they tend to conjure up.

But then I have women who come to get cards, who love the vibe of them, but don't need to peruse for a long time and ask 'Do you have pre made box sets?' and they breathe a sigh of relief when I say yes, and here they are! They love sending cards as much as the next person, but like the 'lucky dip' feel of purchasing and have faith they'll be just fine.

I have so much fun making up the box sets which are sold on our website. We have a new 'Cocktail' set which is so perfect for a hostess gift with a bottle of wine, or for your friends that you always meet for happy hour. There is a 'Fun' set of 8 cards which make a great holiday or anytime gift. Also a new 'In the Pink' Holiday set which is fem and festive! Of course..we have our best selling F-Bomb set, for the slightly more sassy and irreverent friends! You know who they are! All box sets are on SALE too!

I always design the cards with girlfriends and women in mind, and love that they inspire others to send or give a card and keep the intimate connection alive that we don't always get from an email. I hear so many stories of people framing their cards, keeping them on their bedside table, desk or fridge as a memory of the friend and moment they received it.

With the box sets you'll never be caught off guard needing a cool card for a special moment! Send a card, not just a text!

NY Times Magazine Cover- a proud mom moment!

So proud of our 17 year old son Nico for having a 12 page photo spread in the NY Times Magazine the weekend of Sunday, Sept 11, 2016 and also the COVER picture!
A huge thank you to Nico's amazing photography teacher, Martin Ledford, at Samohi, who believed in Nico enough to send his work to the extraordinary Kathy Ryan (director of photography at NY Times magazine) as he felt she would see what he saw in Nico's work.
Well, she did.. and they have collaborated together since March when she asked him to do a photo assignment that showed life at Samohi. It has been a life changing experience for Nico and a great way to see all sides of school and people through the eye of the lens... somewhere he loves to be! (only film camera of course!)) ) )
Also amazing that they chose one of Nico's pics for the COVER of the magazine! Crazy!
So many creative and inspiring kids around us and it's incredible to see the power that kindness, wisdom, mentorship, belief, freedom and support from adults can give our youth. Forever grateful to all those who were a part of this journey with Nico.

Paperlove Boutique studio is on the COVER of Where Women Create magazine!

Absolutely THRILLED to be featured on the cover of the Summer 2016 issue of the fab and always inspiring magazine 'Where Women Create'. This magazine features the creative studio spaces of women around the country and it's so awesome to get a peek into all their different worlds. I am so honored to be featured amongst so many extraordinary women.

Our studios are havens that we spend so much time in and they tend to morph into a reflection of our personality and our work. it's a place where I feel so comfortable and inspired and can spend endless hours in there and have no clue where the time went. My husband has named my studio the 'Girl Cave' and living in a houseful of guys, I love that I have my girl cave sanctuary! Full of organized creative chaos that I can leave out and come back to without bugging anyone else and knowing it'll be just as I left it! It's the little things in life...

Jo Packham is the wonderful editor of 'Where Women Create', 'Where Women Create in Business' and 'where Women Cook'. She has truly created a series of magazines that inspire women to find their passion and create a space, no matter how big or small, to live out their creative dream.

'Cards & Cocktails' party in N.Z.

Introduced our cards to N.Z. with a wonderful evening of 'Cards & Cocktails' at Michelle and Will's home in Auckland. So wonderful to see women in my homeland loving the cards and enjoying them as much as they do in L.A! A huge ocean between us but humor, friendship and the love of connecting is the same. Not to mention amazing fresh passionfruit margaritas, attentive barmen and delicious food! We were lucky to have the beautiful kiwi singers Jackie Bristow and Kaitlyn Smith join us and sing some of their gorgeous music. An inspiring Tuesday evening with so many fab women in one place! Thank you NZ! We will be back.

Such a fun and beautiful evening of cards, cocktails and friends!

NEW 2016 TROPICAL VINTAGE SUMMER LINE!

Loving our new 2016 summer line with a tropical vintage vibe that takes us back to days gone by and the simple and sweet times of long, lazy days spent at the beach. The days when your biggest concern was "When shall I go in for anther swim?" or "Is it ice cream time again?" Growing up in New Zealand and then settling in California, I have never lived more that 10 minutes from the beach, so I love capturing a coastal and beach vibe in my cards, and this line is no exception. I photographed the cards on the beach in Malibu on a sunny and 84 degree L.A. winter's day. I guess another reason I like living here!

We all have friends we can give this card to! Send a card, not just a text!

Paperlove in Muses & Visionaries Magazine

Was thrilled to be featured in the latest Feb/ March issue of the gorgeous magazine  Muses & Visionaries that inspires women to create a life well lived. Such a wonderful creed to live by.  It's a great feeling to wake up excited each morning about heading to the studio to go to work, and loving what you do.

Huffington Post article Note to Self- Send Notes

Thrilled to be mentioned in a Huffington Post article, written by Claire Fordham, on the reasons it's so nice to send cards in the mail in this technological age. It's a lost art that seems to becoming rediscovered and creating a bright spot in people's days. I love the convenience and immediate gratification of the internet as much as the next person, but savor those moments when you open the mailbox and spot a friendly envelope with familiar handwriting in the sea of junk mail. It's wonderful to have a business that makes cards which inspires people to connect with friends and loved ones.  Click on the link below to read the article.

T'is the season...almost!

I just wrote a whole page here....and as I was about to post, the page crashed and I lost it all (aaaggghhh!)...so this may be a short one now! I was saying how I do love the fun and craziness of the holiday season that is almost upon us. But not so crazy that technology loses my stuff!! Thank goodness for paper calendars that won't crash when you need them...which brings me to....

The 2016 Calendars are here! Calendar 1 is 'Mindful & Inspiring' and each month is sweet and pretty. Calendar 2 is 'Fun & Cocktails' which means a little more sassy and for those who enjoy a laugh and happy hour with your girlfriends! I love them both equally, as they speak to all sides of me, but I will say that Calendar 1 is age appropriate for everyone, including teenage girls.

I've loved all the messages I receive from people throughout the year about how the new month makes them feel when they look at it and love seeing how everyone displays them. The beauty of individual pages is that you can be so innovative and creative! I have my calendar framed on my desk and then a page is always on my fridge with a magnet! That way I'm not always having to pull my phone out to know what day is when? You can also cut out the image at the end of the month and you have a great gift card!

The Importance of the Handwritten Note

I had the pleasure of writing a short article for WC Magazine on 'The Importance of the Handwritten Note' which is something really close to my heart. I have always loved sending and receiving cards (not sure which is more fun?) and I feel privileged  to be making something that makes people want to write cards and connect. Many people call it a 'lost art' but I hope it's found and used for many more years to come! The link to my article is below. Keep on writing!

Backyard Booksigning

So happy to host my dear friend, Claire Fordham's booksigning in our backyard for her latest book 'Life Lessons for Mia Rose. An Irreverant Guide to Living and Loving Well' A wonderful turnout of over 80 people who all got to hear Claire read an excerpt from her book before the highly unusual tropical rain showers forced us inside!. It never rains in LA in July, except when you have an outdoor party, of course! It's something we so need, so it was a welcome surprise that only added to the fun. The live music jam  began inside with Julia Fordham, Jeff  Young, Judith Owen , Harry Shearera.k.a Detek Smalls on bass, Jean McLean and many other great musicians! Can't beat great live music in your house on a Sunday afternoon. People ate dinner outside in the evening with the balmy weather and drizzle creating a fab backdrop! Perfect day!

Spring in our Garden

Loving the 80 degree weather we've been having in Santa Monica during the first week of Spring. Our backyard is a private haven with lots of magical nooks and crannies to hang out in. It's always hard to leave it during the warm months, as it just becomes an extension of our house. The back house has a music studio for my husband and son, so more often than not, live music wafts outside! My husband made the signpost naming places we love, and it has been a backdrop for many photos over the years for traveling friends passing through. We love entertaining outside in the summer and treasure those moments with friends and family.

As the saying goes...home is where the heart is...and this is definitely home. ❤️
